The Scottish Baptist College is delighted to announce that the Revd Ian Birch BD(Hons) MPhil MTh will be appointed as its new Principal, effective from June 2014.
Ian was called to the SBC in 2008 as Lecturer/ Academic Registrar, having served in Baptist pastoral ministry for 18 years in Southsea, St Helens and Kirkintilloch. Born on the Wirral, in Cheshire, Ian’s first professional aspirations were in engineering before being led to study at Spurgeon’s College. In taking up the post, Ian speaks of the essential skills in training for ministry and mission as ‘traditioning’ and ‘transforming’. He explains ‘traditioning’ as being part of a learning community that is rooted in Scripture, theology, history, aware of its own Baptist tradition and of living under the rule of Christ. ‘Transforming’ involves encouraging students to apply their education to contexts of ministry and mission in the real world. The task of the College is to help students wrestle with the question of how our faith is to be taught and lived in our contemporary context. Ian’s vision for the College is that it should serve the churches and provide accessibility to the highest standards of university education to those who feel called to serve the purposes of Christ’s kingdom.
In appointing Ian to this position, the College will be seeking to recruit a full-time member of academic staff, details of which are being finalised for release on the College website.
