The King's Meadow

Tools, glorious tools

Had a phone call this morning, from a lovely lady offering us about a gazillion hand tools for use in the King’s Meadow. She’d read about the garden in the PBC Newsletter that’s just gone out around the South side of Peebles, and saw our request for tools. We’re hoping to get groups like Brownies [ more… ]

First of the tatties emerge!

First of the tatties emerge!

Great excitement down at the King’s Meadow tonight as we dug up the first of the potatoes! Ok, I know in theory that potatoes grow underground – I’ve seen them before in my parents’ garden – but actually digging up the plants on our community garden and seeing dozens and dozens of shiny new potatoes [ more… ]

Everything’s rosy in the garden!

Everything's rosy in the garden!

The baby leeks are flourishing, the marrows are appearing and the tattie crop is flowering! New raised beds are being constructed and a large picnic table is in the planning stages – all this even before we have had formal funding for our Community Garden – God is good and this is truly a lovely [ more… ]

Invading St Peter’s Summer Fete!

Invading St Peter's Summer Fete!

St Peter’s (the Episcopal church in Peebles) organised a summer fete on Tweed Green, and were kind enough to offer us a stall. We managed to raise a bit of money for the King’s Meadow (via sales of plants, hand made bunting, freshly cooked popcorn, and our magic apple peeling/coring/slicing machine), but far more importantly [ more… ]

Who is on the Lord’s side? The Gas Board are, apparently.

Who is on the Lord's side? The Gas Board are, apparently.

We were out on the King’s Meadow this morning, digging holes for posts for the raised beds. Or at least, we were trying to dig holes. The hardcore lying under the surface makes scratching anything deeper than 3 inches a major challenge. “What we need,” I said to Andy as we sweated away with spade [ more… ]

The Big Dig: launch of the King’s Meadow Community Garden on April 21st 2013

The Big Dig

The Big Dig

Community Garden projects in Peebles seem to be like buses – you wait ages for one, and then several turn up all at once. Leaving aside the Peebles CAN project for the moment (because we’ll hopefully hear lots about that in the near future), TweedGreen and New Horizons Borders were launching their Secret Garden yesterday, [ more… ]

Topsoil – sorted!

Topsoil - sorted!

We’ve got our topsoil! We owe a huge thank you to Alasdair, site manager at Taylor Wimpey’s Kingsmeadows development, and to Graham Irvine for providing the transport, for no less than 40 tonnes of soil, which arrived on site this morning. Quite what the neighbours must have made of it at 8 o’clock on a [ more… ]

Rotavation – that’s what you need!

Rotavation - that's what you need!

Out on the land again today with Bill and Rab, with cheese scones provided by Margaret, cheery banter by Fergus, and entertainment by Trig the dog, doing more preparation of the land in advance of the Big Dig on the 21st. Last week’s turf lifting had been incomplete because of machinery failure, so we’ve modified [ more… ]

Lifting the turf

Lifting the turf

Bill has been out today with his son-in-law, along with various others to give moral support, lifting the turf on our test plot. Well, on some of it at least – the rather ageing machine broke down half way through, so we’ve got a rectangle of grass within a larger rectangle of soil! Hmm… maybe there’s something [ more… ]
